Stamped concrete is poured like any slab, then pressed with a pattern while it is still soft. The finish can read like stone, brick or plank, and the patio stays one solid slab. A colored border around the edge sets off the pattern in the middle.
Color goes in two ways. Integral color is mixed into the concrete itself, so the color runs all the way through the slab. Surface color sits on the fresh concrete and gives a deeper, more varied look. We have poured a dark gray integral color driveway and a stamped medallion patio.
Exposed aggregate is another finish. The top layer of paste is washed off, so the stone in the mix shows and grips underfoot. Stamped and colored concrete is normally sealed once it cures. The sealer wears and gets redone over the years.
Under the topsoil, much of Whidbey Island is dense glacial till that people here call hardpan. Water does not soak through it, so it perches on top and travels sideways. That is why a low patio on the wrong grade sits in a puddle all winter.
The work under the slab matters as much as the pour. We strip the topsoil and shape the grade to drain away from the house. Then we compact a rock base with our skid steer and plate compactors. Where water needs somewhere to go, the drainage goes in first.
Island County lists the frost line depth for footings at 12 inches and the weathering index for concrete as moderate. A patio slab sits on grade, but footings for steps or a patio cover go below that depth. On a bluff lot, county critical area rules do not allow drainage over the face of the bluff. Washington also requires a free utility locate through 811 before anyone digs.
A concrete walkway from the driveway to the front door pulls the whole approach together. The same color and pattern can carry through to the patio out back. We also pour concrete steps and landings where the ground drops away from the house.
Concrete suits flat spots close to grade that stay put. Where the yard falls away or the view sits high, a wood or composite deck is the better build. Paver patios and walkways are the other choice at grade, and pavers can be lifted and reset later.
On a new home the driveway and walkways usually go in near the end, after the heavy trucks are done. On a remodel, a patio can be poured while we are already on site.

We purchased our dream home on the west side of Whidbey Island above the Puget Sound with 180-degree views of the water and the Olympic Mtns. While we knew the driveway would need to be redone eventually, we soon learned that proper drainage to protect the house and garage had never been installed when the house was originally built. Jeff and his team resolved all of our issues. In front of our garages, Jeff installed proper French drains, a catch basin, and sump pump that pumps the water away. At the same time, Jeff installed proper drainage around the house. Our driveway was a packed dirt path with virtually no stone base. Jeff initially properly graded the driveway before first add a stone base, then a finishing base. After compacting the stone material, our driveway is almost as hard as concrete or asphalt and is 2-3 feet wider and more accessible. While Jeff was working near the garage with his excavator, he accidentally hit the gutter. Jeff immediately told me what happened and within 48 hours, Jeff had an outside gutter company come in and replaced the entire gutter. I appreciated his upfront honesty. As to communication, Jeff could not have been better. I found him through a Google search. He returned my original call within 2 hours. On Whidbey Island you are lucky to even have a contractor return any call. Jeff came out the same day to scope out the work and started the job within 10 days in my case. He and has team where there each day continuing to make progress. Needless to say, I give Jeff a 5-star review and when the next project comes up, I will certainly be reaching out to Culver Construction. Think this review isn’t legit, think again.
